The Imaging Tech Alarm System (ITAS) is a patented emergency alert system that enables an MRI technologist to call for help from inside Zone IV without leaving the patient's side.
The system includes a wearable personal actuator that the technologist can activate immediately during an emergency. As a backup, a squeeze bulb is also positioned at the face of the MRI scanner. Activating either device sounds audible and visual alarms in the MRI control room and outside the MRI suite to alert trained responders. An optional communication module can also send text messages, emails, or automated phone calls to designated trained responders.
For added flexibility, a patient actuator is also available. It can be used in place of the traditional squeeze bulb, if desired, providing patients with another reliable way to signal the tech for assistance.

Formal MRI safety testing and certification are currently in process and have not yet been completed.
Based on our testing to date, ITAS has been specifically designed for use inside MRI Zone IV (the scan room). The system does not contain ferrous materials, produces no MRI image artifacts, and has demonstrated no interference with the MRI's magnetic field or RF system.
ITAS has been successfully tested in a 1.5T MRI environment. Testing in a 3T MRI environment is planned as part of our ongoing validation process.

Some emergency call systems rely on voice activation to initiate an alarm. That alarm initiation creates an RF signal which may be less reliable through an MRI suite’s RF-shielded walls. The unit receiving that RF signal will then try to send the alarm message via a cellar connection. ITAS does not require the technologist to speak or reach a wall-mounted button, nor a cellar connection. It can be activated immediately using a wearable actuator or a squeeze bulb at the face of the scanner
The ITAS alert is transmitted through a fiber-optic connection, allowing it to pass through the RF shielding without relying on an RF signal and doesn’t require a cellar connection to transmit the alarm alert. ITAS was designed specifically for MRI environments and for situations in which a technologist may be working alone and needs to call for help without leaving the patient’s side.

Yes. The alarm actuators are easily worn by the technologist and do not affect anything regarding the technologist daily routine. A highly suggested Responders Training Protocol is included with the alarm. This has been created by an MRI Tech to fit into MRI departments SOPs and assure compliance with MRI safety standards.
ITAS operates independently and does not require IT support or a network connection. There is an optional text, email, or phone notification feature available. The actuator batteries are rechargeable, and quick daily testing confirms the system is functioning properly.
Installation typically takes less than a day, requires no construction, and can be completed after hours to minimize disruption. The system can also be relocated if your MRI scanner is replaced or the suite is reconfigured.
-
Yes. The 2024 ACR MR Safety Manual (page 21) recommends a readily accessible communication system or emergency call button within Zone IV. ITAS was specifically designed to meet that recommendation by allowing MRI technologists to call for help immediately without leaving the patient's side.

Fill out the Contact Us form on this website, or email us directly at sales@sssystemdesigns.com. As a small, founder-led team, you’ll speak with the people who built and support ITAS, not a call center.

ITAS was invented by an MRI technologist, and S&S System Designs stays hands-on after the sale: our team visits your facility in person to service the unit and pull compliance data, rather than leaving you to manage it remotely. The lease is all-inclusive — installation, maintenance, and software updates are built into the price, so there's nothing else to negotiate later. You're working with a company built around one problem, not a vendor juggling a broad product line.
