Understanding ACR Recommendations for Zone IV Emergency Communication
The 2024 ACR (American College of Radiology) MR Safety Manual includes a specific recommendation about emergency communication inside the MRI scan room. It's worth quoting exactly, since the wording is precise:
"A readily accessible communication system or emergency call button within Zone IV that allows personnel to quickly contact security or request help."
What this actually means
Zone IV is the MRI scan room itself, the highest-restriction zone in the ACR's four-zone MRI safety model. ACR is saying that personnel inside that room, during a scan, should have a way to call for help that doesn't require leaving the room first.
Why it's a recommendation and not a requirement
ACR's manual sets recommended practice; it isn't a regulatory mandate the way some Joint Commission standards are enforced. That said, ACR accreditation reviews and internal safety audits increasingly reference the manual's current recommendations, and it's a natural reference point if an incident is ever reviewed after the fact. A facility that hasn't addressed it is exposed on both the safety and documentation side, even without a formal citation.
How to check where your facility stands
Ask a straightforward question: if a technologist needed help right now, from inside the scan room, without leaving the patient, how would that happen? If the honest answer is "they'd have to step out and find someone," that's the gap the ACR language is describing.
Closing the gap
This is a narrow, specific requirement: a communication system inside Zone IV, not a redesign of the whole safety program. ITAS was built to be exactly that: a fiber-optic call system installed in the MRI suite, with no RF or magnetic interference, that lets a technologist or patient trigger an immediate alert without leaving the room. FAQ
Where does this recommendation appear in the ACR manual? It's in the 2024 ACR MR Safety Manual's Zone IV guidance.
Is a phone or intercom in the MRI room enough to satisfy this? Standard phones and intercoms usually aren't MRI-safe for placement inside Zone IV during scanning; the system needs to be designed for that specific environment.
